THE STORY OF SPATHAREI

“Our laws are stitched into the fabric of who we are.” – saying from Spatharei

Spatharei is the highest village on Samos island, built across the upper slopes of Mount Burnias at 650 meters above sea level. Known as "The Balcony of the Aegean," the village offers sweeping views of Ikaria, Patmos, Fourni, Naxos and even Mykonos on clear days. Its narrow stone alleys, centuries-old churches, and timeless rhythms once thrived with over two thousand inhabitants. But over the past decades, fire and migration have emptied it.

And yet—Spatharei has never lost its soul.

Today, only a few dozen villagers remain. Among them: farmers, winemakers, and elders who speak of saints, pirates, and the man who fathered 18 children and named the village. Here, longevity is legend, and honesty a birthright.

Samos Untold was born from a desire to listen to the land—and respond with beauty, care, and courage. Founded by Georg and Ninnie Möller, the project began as a vision: to restore not just the village and all the buildings, but a way of life. To shape a place where thoughtful design invites purpose – and every guest becomes a guardian of its spirit.”

Our mission is not to recreate the past, but to give Spatharei a future worthy of its roots. Through architecture, agriculture, art and community, we are weaving new life into the stone and silence.

This is not just a destination. This is an awakening.
