Details & Features-
Perched just below the very summit of Mount Bournia in the southern highlands of Samos, Spatharei is one of the island’s most beautifully situated traditional villages. Its elevated position offers panoramic, uninterrupted views across the Aegean Sea—extending all the way to Patmos, Fourni, Naxos and Ikaria—creating an atmosphere of serenity that is both authentic and breathtaking.
Samos is renowned for its diversity, and the surroundings of Spatharei showcase this beautifully. The landscape is a lush blend of pine forests, terraced slopes, wild herbs and blooming flora, supported by a distinctive microclimate shaped by the Meltemi winds. Unlike many Mediterranean islands, Samos benefits from this airflow, giving the island a character that is closer to subtropical, with rich vegetation and exceptional biodiversity.
-
The area around Spatharei is a dream for hikers and nature lovers. Several hiking trails start directly in the village, winding through forests, past historic chapels, along ridgelines and through valleys filled with aromatic herbs.
The wildlife is remarkably varied. Flamingos can be spotted in the wetlands of the island during migration seasons. Jackals inhabit remote forested areas and may occasionally be heard at night. On certain beaches, you can witness baby turtles making their very first walk to the sea—an unforgettable natural spectacle. You may also encounter eagles, herons, vibrant butterflies, wild goats, hedgehogs and many other species that thrive in this fertile environment.
-
Samos is celebrated for having over 250 beaches, offering an incredible range of coastal experiences. From long, shallow sandy beaches ideal for families to crystal-clear pebble bays, rocky coves perfect for snorkelling, and secluded natural spots, the island provides endless opportunities for exploration and relaxation.
-
Spatharei combines tranquillity with authentic charm. The village currently offers two traditional Greek restaurants serving classic regional dishes and local produce, and one stone-oven pizza restaurant where the dough is prepared using old, traditional bread recipes and baked to perfection in a wood-fired oven. Two additional restaurants are planned, promising even more variety in the future.
-
Samos measures approximately 45 km by 20 km, making it easy to explore while still offering extraordinary variety—archaeological sites, monasteries, wineries, waterfalls and charming coastal towns all await discovery.
